The Just: a tale that is so remarkable as to be almost unbelievable

Het toonaangevende Britse geschiedenistijdschrift History of War Magazine schrijft over de Engelse vertaling van De rechtvaardigen: “Dutch author Jan Brokken tells a tale that is so remarkable as to be almost unbelievable. That every word is true and that the story is little known even today makes it a book that needs to be read in the sensitive, compelling translation by David McKay. The Just is the book that Zwartendijk’s deeds truly deserve. It is a painstaking reconstruction of a story that should not haven been forgotten and that, thanks to Brokkens sensitivity and laser-focussed attention to details, can now be told again. Though they have honoured by the Jewish community worldwide, the action of these unassuming heroes who save so many lives have been largely unknown. Brokken’s book should change that, and it deserves to be read by the widest audience possible.”

“An inspirational and richly detailed lock at bureaucratic efforts to help Jews escape Europe in the early years of WWII. Readers will take heart from this obscure yet consequential acts of courage.”
